Music
The Lehighton elementary music program begins in Kindergarten and continues through fifth grade. Students attend a 45-minute music class once every four days. Elementary students experience a curriculum that gives them opportunities to perform, create, and respond to music, as well as learn the social and historical aspects of music. Students often sing, dance, play a variety of classroom instruments, and are educated using a mixture of Kodaly, Orff, and Dalcroze methodologies.

Recorder instruction occurs in fourth grade. Students develop a better understanding of the fundamentals of music reading, the importance of home practice and self-discipline, and a keener appreciation of music in general. The techniques and skills that are learned playing recorder help to prepare students for our elementary band program. Fourth and fifth grade students attend live performances of the high school band and are given the opportunity to learn an instrument in fifth grade.

In September, fifth grade students may begin instrumental instruction in group lessons held during the school day. Lessons are 30-45 minutes in length and are scheduled to meet on a rotating basis so that the same subject of classroom instruction is not missed each cycle. As students become more proficient on their individual instrument, they begin to rehearse as a band and play together as an entire ensemble. Elementary instrumental students participate in nightly concerts as well as occasional performances during the school day for the student body.

Fifth grade students also have the opportunity to participate in elementary chorus. Fourth and fifth grade students hear a performance featuring the high school chorus and learn the types of warm-ups, skills, and techniques that go into singing in an ensemble. Chorus rehearsals take place before the regular school day and students are also able to perform in nightly concerts and performances during the school day.

Our goal in the elementary music program is to provide all students with a high-quality music education in a safe and engaging learning environment. We hope to create life long learners and participants in music.

Physical Education

Elementary Health and Physical Education runs on a four day cycle with every student receiving it for the entire school year. Physical Education consists of a diverse range of activities that physically move the body, incorporate exercise, and team play. Students learn basic movements including running, jumping, throwing, and catching. As well as develop balancing, agility, and coordination skills. Students then apply these skills to a range of activities, small sided games, and to prepare them to play individual and team sports. Health lessons cover basic hygiene, introduction to body systems, nutrition, dimensions of health, and safety practices.
